Green Printer

Whitmore is an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified printer.  While we are proud to have received this distinction, this only applies to our usage as FSC concentrates solely on the chain of custody from the forest to the printing presses. Whitmore does a whole lot more to ensure that we are as green as we can be!

Recycling

Over the course of a typical year Whitmore recycles more than 30,000 metal plates, 695 tons of paper waste and 4000 pounds of ink.

Papers

We encourage the use of recycled papers and elemental chlorine free (Etch) or totally chlorine free (TCF) papers. The sheets are compatible with all of our print processes and often cost no more than virgin papers.  Recycled papas reduce water pollution by 35% and air pollution by 74% — using 55% less water and saving 60% of the energy required to make virgin paper.

Inks

We use Braden Sutphin’s Earth Pride series inks which are linseed oil based, derived from the flax plant and known for their low level of toxicity. We buy inks that exclude heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and exavalent chromium. Our inks are in compliance with the A.N.S.I. Standard Z66.1 and the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s leaded and heavy metal content requirements.

Chemicals

We have reduced all VOC  emissions from our plant. We routinely haul all chemicals off site for proper recycling, and have taken the additional step of adding backflow devices to our processing equipment to ensure that there will be no discharge into the water system.

New Equipment

We routinely look to technology for ways to reduce energy costs and any negative impact on the environment. Our  state–of–the–art Heidelberg presses use 18% less energy that the typical printing plant in the mid-Atlantic.  As a computer–to–plate (CTP) company with an electronic ink profile system, we can make-ready faster,  thus we use less energy and fewer raw materials. CTP also eliminates the need for film, proofing materials, and chemicals and their byproducts.
