Foil Stamping / Embossing

Foil Stamping

Foil Stamping takes an image and recreates it as a single-color with an opaque quality. It can be metallic, or a PMS-like color with either a satin or glossy finish. Foil Stamping requires an image that has some solid area, otherwise it will break up, so avoid using thin/tightly kerned type or extremely fine images. Stamping large solids, especially on coated sheets, or stamping too close to the paper's edge can also cause some problems. To ensure proper foil release (making sure the foil comes off the die cleanly), take care in selecting your paper weight and grade, and if you are unsure, we're glad to help. Also be aware that reversing fine type or images out of an area to be stamped can result in a loss of detail. When stamping over inks, be sure the inks and varnishes are wax free! Tip: As an extra precaution, you may want to ask to have a sample die strike done before running the full job.

Embossing

When you are planning an embossed project, take special care when selecting paper weight and grade. As a general rule, the greater the paper weight, the greater detail and depth an embossed image can have. Avoid placing images too close together, and make sure rules are at least 2 points thick. Tip: Slightly increase the size of your artwork that is to be embossed, as an optical illusion often occurs and the finished embossed image may appear slightly smaller!
